Happy August, Gentle Reader! I hope you’ve been keeping well! The first sunflowers and daylilies just opened in my garden, and the leggy violas I bought on clearance for $1.25 (then were subsequently nibbled by jackrabbits) have rebounded in spectacular fashion, flush with blooms! Growing and observing plants is one of my favourite pastimes, handed down to me by my mother, an amazing gardener with a veritable park-like yard of drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, cultivated and native flora that attract all manner of beneficial insects and support oodles of nesting birds. So, when Hornsboggle and Dodge — whom I started writing for my mother! — needed a secret code (because honourable thieves should definitely have a secret code!), it seemed only natural to me that it should be floral.
